DfE Maths Guidance Years 1 - 6

At Sheepy Magna CE Primary School, we aim to provide an excellent education where all children make progress. Our mathematics curriculum equips pupils with tools that include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to use skills with fluency. The 2014 National Curriculum for England and Wales has been taught throughout the whole school since September 2015. We are developing a mastery approach across the whole school which means that all pupils are encouraged and enabled to grasp key concepts; we strive to let no child fall behind in their understanding.

During the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, maths forms part of many interactive learning experiences. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through play, exploration and discussion. Children work with shapes and begin to learn their properties, use language to give positional clues and compare quantities, identify and recreate patterns. They learn to count, read, write and order numbers.

During Key Stage 1 pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion. They learn to count, read, write and order numbers. They develop a range of mental calculation skills and begin to use them with confidence. They learn about shape and space through practical activity. They begin to grasp mathematical language, using it to talk about their methods and explain their reasoning when solving problems.

During Key Stage 2 pupils use the number system more confidently. They move from counting reliably to calculating fluently with all four number operations. They are taught to tackle a problem with mental methods before using other approaches. We support them and help them whilst providing them with equipment and skills to encourage independence. Pupils explore features of shape and space and develop their measuring skills in a range of contexts. They discuss and present their methods and reasoning using a wider range of mathematical language, diagrams and charts.
